Each year starts a new year with different challenges. This 2023-24 academic school year comes with a set of challenges. The school is run off of different budgets that are set each academic year.
Roger Sanchez, Principal of Ridgeview High School says there will be differences in events this academic year. Some big events that bring in a lot of money are formal, and prom, but those events are the most expensive to put on.
The ASB budget is just one of the budgets that the school has to operate from. This budget is used for students. This budget helps with dances that the school sponsors (this does not include Prom), school sponsored events such as rallies, and Lip Sync Battle. According to Deb Whitbey, Activities Director the ASB budget is very low. Whitbey said, “An exact amount was less than what we have had in the past.” Whitbey added that, “There were some sports teams that got new uniforms, and spent money on homecoming and formal”. Students in ASB get a say so as to how the money is spent from this account. Students have to approve purchases before ASB can spend the funds. After ASB approves the purchase, it goes to an administrator who then has to approve it before money is spent. A lot of the time ASB wants people to be involved so that the money they gain from the fundraisers is able to be used back on the student body.
The principal budget is unknown due to there’s always a change in numbers every year. One thing Sanchez says is for students to, “Get Involved”. Sanchez also stated that the number “depends on what they roll over from the previous year.” Sanchez added that, “A lot of money was used last year” for things.
Z’khary James student at Ridgeview High School was asked, “What would you like the school to purchase?” He responded saying, “Maybe some better chrome books and some better Wi-Fi because the Wi-Fi, and school computers can be really laggy sometimes.” He believes some of the money should be getting put towards school fundraisers to help out the budget. James also said money should be equally distributed and spent throughout the whole school, and not spend it all on one thing.
Kaiya Stowe, another student at Ridgeview High School, would like to see the money get put towards the education of the school, and the school athletics. Stowe says something that we can give up is, “Those big projector boards you really don’t need in every classroom”. The rallies will be different from last year with different activities, and more stuff to do, says Stowe. The benefits of the school budget this year is the food from the student snack bar has gotten better as a comparison to last year.
