The app formerly known as Twitter announced a logo change to “X” June 23, 2023. The app’s purpose is for users to broadcast short posts known as “Tweets” and now Elon Musk seeks to turn the app into an “everything” app according to CEO Linda Yaccarino. Musk rebranded Twitter for a shift in corporate strategy, which has added drastic changes to Twitter since he took over in October of 2022. I disagree with the logo change and believe it is not a good idea because the original Twitter bird representing “Tweets’ ‘ and “X’ ‘ doesn’t match the app’s purpose whatsoever.
Although the name change seems like more than enough, Musk hopes to make Twitter X similar to China’s WeChat which will give consumers of the app access to basically do whatever they like online. My personal view is that the whole point of Twitter is to post about your feelings, announcements, beliefs, and now because you were able to post videos or send longer messages on Twitter, Musk decides to might as well change the app entirely to what he believes “makes sense”. I think the logo change and new features was to get the option off the table for other future buyers of the app, so Musk could own an app he completely turned into his own for as long as he wants. Musk has been known for his obsession with the letter “X” that began with his first venture “X.com” and as he was deciding between Q, X, and Z he was seated at a restaurant and asked his waitress which she liked better. She chose X and Musk made that the final decision, but changing an app that has been around for over a decade to something totally different because of a mere obsession seems a bit eccentric in my opinion.
Twitter X now has permanent “dark mode” which can benefit those with sensitive eyes and improve battery life as well. Personally, I believe this is a good feature, because I for one dislike “white mode” due to it always being so bright and hurting my eyes, and I sure hope the change in quality improves my phone battery and would say this is a good thing to come out of the changes that were brought on as the logo change was made.
Even though Twitter is called “X” people are continuously going to call it Twitter. Does this defeat the purpose of changing the logo? I think because of how popular Twitter was, now calling it “X” will take some time and that popularity Twitter once had will decrease as well.
