The fall play is based on a story of four sisters growing up during the Civil War. This year’s Drama Department is tackling the fall play this year on Little Women. This play was a very heartfelt, and emotional show, the play was directed and costumed by the drama teacher Kelci Serri.
Little Women was hosted November 16-18, and the show can be relatable to students who grow up with big families and the different personalities siblings have. The show was also set during Christmas time, Serri states, “it’s a good show to do during this time period to get people in the holiday spirit.” According to Serri “it’s a good learning experience for students to see what goes on with putting a show together because there is a lot that people don’t see.” What inspired the play of Little Women to be chosen this year was that Serri has two sisters and is related to the story, according to her the characters have always been so real and raw and it’s been a special book she’s shared with her family growing up. The family aspect of students coming together and sharing bonds is what Serri aims for in their play. Although at times it got stressful, it all came together and worked out great.
The cast members from Little Women fit their roles perfectly according to Summer Cortez, who is one of the lead actors. It is her last fall play since she is a senior, Cortez is playing the role of Joe who is writing the book of their lives. Cortez loves the theater department, and enjoys the story of Little Women. Cortez worked really hard to get the role of Joe, she studied and memorized lines. The reason why Cortez was determined to get the role of Joe is because she feels that she relates to Joe. Cortez claims she relates to Joe, “she’s really ambitious, and really stubborn and Joe doesn’t hide that, she’s very open about it and she knows what she wants.” Although Joe is a great character Cortez expressed how she’s not perfect and she has flaws and is temperamental, she also goes on and explains how she can relate to that because, “it is very frustrating when you aren’t taken seriously because it happens a lot as a women especially when you are determined about things.”
Aidan Romero, who played Lauri, one of the other lead roles, claims, “ I really enjoyed being able to participate in the cast and it was a very acceptable and safe space.” Based on everyone else’s great experiences of being in the theater department Romero was inspired to be a part of Little Women, and he would definitely like to be in future plays.
