Senior, D’zeena Grewal who plays the position of mid field stated that she started playing soccer at the age of six because of her parents encouragement to play a sport. With her father’s encouragement, he became the most influential person to her. With that encouragement, Grewal is looking forward to this upcoming soccer season.
Something that Grewal practices to help her handle the pressure of big games is focusing on the fact that she has been playing soccer for quite some time now. This technique allows her mind to rely on the fact that she knows what she is doing. One way she keeps herself motivated during challenging moments in soccer is by thinking about her team. According to her, “I have a lot of good relationships with people on my team and they keep me from giving up and help me remember that at the end of the day, the sport is meant to be fun.” A routine that Grewal practices to keep her in shape for the season is playing club soccer. According to Grewal, her greatest strength on the team is, “Keeping everybody calm.” She believes that teamwork consists of keeping your team in check in a positive way. Advice that she would give to people looking to play soccer is, “Do it, it’s really fun, our team is really inviting, we have a good time, and it’s a good environment.” Grewal believes that the toughest team that will face against this year is Independence High School because she knows a few of the players and they are really good.
A few goals that Grewal has set for this season are to have fun and win. Her senior year is important to her and she just wants to enjoy it and make sure it is memorable in a good way. Grewal really hopes that the team makes it to the playoffs and has an unforgettable season.
Freshman, Alexyss Gridiron who plays the right wing position started playing soccer at the age of five because it was something for her to do. One of the most influential people in her soccer career so far is her sister who is also on the team. According to Gridiron, “Probably my sister because she motivates me the most.”
The best piece of advice that she has received while playing soccer is to stay engaged in the game during the offseason and keep working on her skills. She believes that her greatest strength on the field is crossing the ball because of her quality kick. One area of the game that Gridiron is working on is her defense. She describes the feeling of making a goal as exciting. Some of her biggest goals this season are, “To improve my defense and get as much playing time as possible.” Gridiron’s point of view on teamwork is that it is needed and very important. Lastly, According to Gridiron her biggest hope for this season is to win the league.
Girls’ soccer coach Andres Murillo started coaching Varsity girls’ soccer because he was promoted to the job. His core values as a coach are to have discipline, commitment, and resilience. According to Murillo, “As a coach, I definitely aim for discipline. You have to have discipline to play because it involves not just the sport but school, family, and everything.” He believes that commitment and mental toughness is needed. It shows that your heart is really focused on the game. He also believes that resilience is important because no matter what you need to always keep fighting. “Some people think that it is more about technical skill. I think it is more about the mental toughness that will help them succeed… mental toughness takes years to build up and once they build it nothing will take them down.” Murrillo believes the toughest team that the team will go against this year is Bakersfield Christian High School due to how good they are with the ball and there improvement over for the last five to six years.
Most of the team this year has a lot of experience which is one of the biggest strengths the team has. They have a lot of individual talent along with the fact that most of them participate in club soccer. The biggest goal that Murillo has set for the team this year is to win the Valley Championship. He is very proud that his team has built up a good culture this year.
The Girls’ Soccer team this year has a lot of goals in common. Everyone is itching to make it to the Valley Championship and win. As well as working hard every day to beat the toughest opponent they will face this year.
