The seniors this year for wrestling are on the rise. Last season was rough due to a coach change at the beginning of the season and only having one senior last season. Sophomore Eric Cantu states, “ I feel that we have some pretty good seniors this year, a pretty good line up, I feel like they would place at most tournaments we go to at this point.” With the season just beginning, senior Ezekiel Ortiz states, “I can see a bright future for this season.” With only a couple people that were into the sport. Now with 20 new players, Coach Aaron Garza feels as if the sport is now growing. “We only had a couple people that were dedicated to the sport and a couple people that had interest in the sport.” states Garza. This season wrestling is expanding, compared to last year. Garza states, “The hope is for them to make it past valley, place in masters, and try to make it to state.” Garza states, “The toughest opponent last season, I always tell the kids is themselves.” With that it really shows the dedication between the players of wrestling.
Garza describes an excellent wrestler as “having cauliflower ear which occurs when someone takes a direct hit or injury to the outer ear.” Although the season has not fully started up yet, many see a bright future on the horizon. Sophomore Eric Cantu states, “I look forward to reaching 126’s weight class this season compared to being around 145’s last season.” Cantu describes his toughest opponent this season to be a D1 recruit from Monache High School who is committed to Cal Poly. Cantu states, “He was very strong and very strong and very fast.” With Ortiz having a weight class of 138, Garza feels as if, “his toughest opponent is himself”.
Ortiz states, “ Definitely making a lot of changes in how I wrestle this year.” Hopes for Ortiz this year strikes even more than last season with having his season cut short due to an elbow injury. With last season being “A little bumpy” states Garza. With Garza being coach all season now he feels as if everything will be up to par.
