The Sophomore ASB members Desarie Castillo as Sophomore, Camila Martinez, and Mckenzie Cabrai decided to change things up this year and make this year’s Sadie Hawkins Dance memorable. Since the Sadie Hawkins Dance is not as popular as Homecoming or Formal they also decided to change it up to make more people attend this dance. Cobrair stated,” The reason for the name change was because not many people showed up to the Sadie Hawkins dance so we decided to change it up.” Instead of calling it the Sadie Hawkins Dance they changed the name to Wofie’s Jaripeo.
Jaripeo means bull riding practiced mainly in central or southern Mexico. The environment at a Jaripeo is very welcoming. According to these ASB members, everyone is encouraged to dance to the beat of the music, no matter their experience level. At Jaripeos, Vaqueros are expected to ask the Vaqueras to dance with them. This year Sophomore Class ASB members are changing the whole point of the Sadie Hawkins Dance to celebrate Mexican Culture.
Martinas stated,” We wanted to embrace Mexican Culture so we decided to embrace it by replicating the Jaripeo.” The Sophomores take control of this Wofie’s Jaripeo since it is funding the sophomore class. This year’s theme will be Mexican Culture. They got this idea by realizing how Ridgeview High School does celebrate Mexican Culture but only during school hours and they wanted to change that.
A band called Los Elegantes played Spanish music throughout the night. They served Agua Frescas as drinks, a taco truck with different options like quesadillas and different types of tacos, another food truck called Krazed Food and Deserts, and an elotero. The dance was on February 16th and was located in the quad at Ridgeview High School. The Sophomore ASB members said the tickets were seven dollars before the dance, five dollars with an ASB sticker, and ten dollars at the entrance.
There is a tradition for the Sadie Hawkins dance where the girl would ask the guys to dance. According to the ASB sophomore members it does not matter if the girl asks the guy or the guy asks the girl. Castillo (Sophomore Class President) stated,” We are not doing the Sadie Hawkins Tradition which is female asking the males to be their date to the dance.”
