On December 28th, 2023 Gypsy Rose Blanchard was released from prison after serving eight years for the murder of her mother, Clauddine (DeeDee) Blanchard in 2015. She was originally going to get ten years, but she didn’t do the actual murder. Yes, she played a role in the murder but the murder alone was her ex-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn who is now serving a life sentence. Does Gypsy deserve all this hype? Especially in being an accomplice and murderer. I think she is both an accomplice as well as a murderer because she fully had the intention of murdering DeeDee but also an accomplice at the same time because she didn’t do the actual murder itself.
She had enough of the torture her mother would put her through because since Gypsy was a toddler she would get mentally, physically, and medically abused by her mother. Her mother often changed up her birth year which made her age change up often. DeeDee told everyone that Gypsy was 19 when in reality she was 23. Her mother also lied about her not being able to walk and made her use a wheelchair for so many years. DeeDee made Gypsy take so many medications that were never needed and her mother made everyone believe she had these medical conditions. Everything her mother did to her led to her having to escape the violent way out.
Gypsy needed to escape her mother because if she didn’t she would slowly be dying the more her mother would abuse her. It was a be-killed-or-kill situation that could not go on any longer. She had enough and she started conspiring with Godejohn to get away from her mother. It took a year for the plan to go into motion and when it did she second-guessed her choice but in the end, it was done and she had to live with it for the rest of her life. At first Gypsy denied being involved in the murder but after a year locked up, she came clean and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
After getting released from prison at the end of 2023, Gypsy has been getting a lot of hype but should she be getting all of this hype for murdering her mother? I think she should but also should not be getting so much hype because in the end, she did help kill her mother. But she was also a victim of abuse for many years and a victim of her mother’s constant lies. Her mother raised her alone without her father, Rod Blanchard, being involved much. DeeDee suffered from a mental illness called Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Which made her isolate her daughter and herself from the world and made people believe Gypsy had medical conditions that never even existed in the first place. But definitely, I have mixed feelings about Gypsy getting so much attention because murder is still a murder even if she didn’t directly do the murder. She still conspired and made up the plan. But I also think that what happened to Gypsy should never happen to anybody else and what happened to her shocked the entire world. Even herself.
