This year’s election season has been slowly shaping up to be a repeat of the previous, but with far more cards on the playing field than ever before. The United States of America is a country of divisions. None is more striking and apparent than the divide between the Democratic and Republican parties. For the past 170 years the election season has been dominated by these two parties. No matter how much American politics, culture, and ethics have changed a majority of votes will either be going into a Democrat, or republican ballot box. Who are the frontrunners for the parties in 2024? As of now, the only remaining republican candidate in the race is former president Donald J. Trump. For the Democrats the race is between current president Joe Biden, Marianne Williamson, and Gary Palmer. Jill Stein, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West are all candidates running as independents. However, Donald Trump and Joe Biden are the big two, and the two that will be discussed primarily.
The first and one of the most infamous candidates to be discussed is Donald J. Trump. I am of the opinion that under no circumstances should former President Trump ever be allowed to take office again. His vision for America’s future has been increasingly authoritarian and more bent on revenge against his political opponents than actually running a nation. Trump is more content with instating loyalist yes-men in his cabinet than those actual statesmen capable of keeping a nation afloat. He has proven himself more than willing to lie and undermine American democracy. With the January 6th riots and election fraud claims coming especially to mind. He seeks to pardon those who partook in the riots, deploy national guard, deal with immigration, suspend birthright citizenship, and undo much of the work prior Democrat presidents have done. Trump, when asked if he agreed with his Lawyers stated, “I asked you a yes or no question. Could a president who ordered SEAL Team 6 to assassinate a political rival … Would he be subject to criminal prosecution?” stated, “If a President of the United States does not have immunity, he’ll be totally ineffective because he won’t be able to do anything because it will mean he’ll be prosecuted,” This alone is a frightening prospect, even if the former president did not explicitly claim to endorse the idea, the subtext alone is damning.
Joe Biden, the aspiring Democrat nominee is the oldest president in American history at 81-years old. While personally it would be preferably to have a younger candidate in office, one who can more closely relate to the struggles of the American youth, I have little qualms with the current U.S President. In this current election season it is imperative to ensure that a reasonable candidate is elected. One who knows how to run a country, and Joe Biden has years of experience in that matter as former Vice President and former U.S Senator. I would prefer a statesman, to a hack no matter the age. The younger Democrat candidates also seem mildly promising but I doubt any of them will get the nomination, and with Donald Trump as the only remaining Republican candidate, it seems that this year’s presidential race will be a repeat of the last
