What is A.I. or Artificial Intelligence? At Ridgeview High school there seems to be a debate whether students should be allowed to use A.I or also known as Chat GPT. Artificial Intelligence is a system of technology that allows you to generate, classify, and perform tasks like image analysis and speech recognition.
Triandous Hobson, an English teacher at Ridgeview High School says that he doesn’t believe that you need to have Chat GPT on your phone. Hobson states that, “If I were to put a student in a room and ask them about the topic they wouldn’t know what is going on”. Hobson, also says that he has learned that the students care more about the grade than actually learning the curricular. Hobson says that, “A.I can’t make an emotional impact on a student like a teacher can and that people rely more on A.I than their own knowledge”. Hobson adds that, “Even though you use A.I you don’t always comprehend it so it won’t always help you”.
Gianna Gonzalez, a Sophomore at Ridgeview says that she has used A.I in the past to help her on assignments she didn’t understand. She did understand that she could’ve gotten a bad grade, but she needed the help her teacher wasn’t giving her. She stated, “I would do some of the work I understood, but halfway through I would use A.I for help”. She doesn’t think that the school should ban A.I because she wouldn’t be able to use it anymore. Gonzalez feels that even though A.I is cheating for some classes she says she “doesn’t care” if she gets the work done. She states,“A.I isn’t an advantage because anyone can use it if they really wanted to”.
Mary Guenette, a Science teacher at Ridgeview High School says that, “AI tools can help a lot to improve students’ grades as long as it is used wisely and appropriately”. Guenette states, “ I think it can, but A.I. lacks the emotional connections that occur in the classroom. A big part of our job as teachers is not only to teach content, but teach to the kid”. Guenette also says that AI is not monitored in high school; it stops students from being able to problem solve as adults. She, states “As a society, though, we cannot become so dependent on A.I. that we lose ourselves in the process. A.I. cannot teach humanity which is something everyone needs”.
