On July 25th 2024, California Governor, Gavin Newsom made the ultimate decision to clear the homeless off the streets, but where will these people go? It’s not like they can just pick up their encampments and go somewhere else. I do not think this is fair because if they are banned from living on streets, they already struggle finding food, water, especially shelter, so banning them just makes matters worse. Whether it’s a homeless shelter or just somewhere on the streets that will do. So for this to be happening is not fair to those on the streets.
If cities do not abide by or obey Newsom’s new order about the homeless encampments now then they will lose out on their state fundings for the next year. But the issue is that where exactly are those living out on the streets supposed to go? I don’t understand what they are exactly supposed to do and go because wherever they go they get run out and get complaints from whoever is around. Whether it’s an abandoned building, a park, behind a building, etc. Being homeless definitely isn’t an easy thing to go through and the situation is even harder altogether to deal with when you have the government kicking you off the streets just to move to another side of the streets. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned a lower court ruling that announced that governments are not able to force them off the streets, away from their encampments, if there are not any shelter beds available for them to sleep in.
Newsom has invested around $24 billion across several state agencies and departments. Also funding millions of dollars to provide services for the homeless people, helping them find shelter. Newsom has already helped over 165,000 people out of homelessness into interim or permanent housing. This does help in the long run somewhat, but there are still so many more homeless people, families, out there that struggle to stay alive. Not having anywhere to go so they have to turn to the life of the impossible and stay on the streets to do whatever they can to survive.
Overall, I don’t think it’s fair because those on the streets don’t have anywhere to go. They already struggle physically and mentally as is so getting told that they need to move or getting kicked off their encampments makes it harder on them because there is not much they can necessarily do.
