Ridgeview High School is hosting not only an intense display of acting with “Miracle Worker” but also a “pop-rock” musical called “Six” that has been described as an “Entertainment Juggernaut” by The New York Times. Both plays will be hosted in September and November respectively.
“Miracle Worker” has been described by drama teacher Kelci Cerri as “Super intense” with “very physical, intense acting”, a first in her time as a drama teacher at Ridgeview High School elevated by the performances of her advanced class. The actor for Percy, a friend of Hellen Keller in the play will be played by, Senior, Bryson Holifield. He is most excited for the upcoming performance at Bakersfield College this October and to see the audience’s reactions to the actors’ performances. In hopes of opening the audience’s eyes to people with disabilities and how they navigate life. Senior, Serit Dhand, is playing Virginia, A servant. She is looking forward to her role. She stated “I’ve never really had a speaking role- with this many lines” emphasizing her preparation and passion for putting herself out there and “get out of her shell”.
Casting is done and preparation has begun with the play getting ready for opening night on September, 25th. Ridgeview’s english classes help out the theatre department as the days lead up to opening night, by bringing their classes for the audience. All plays are scheduled at 7pm aside from 1 p.m. matinees on the Saturday when a play is being performed and they are always $5 with snacks available at the concession stands.
The second play “six” is being described as fun and entertaining, a lot more lighthearted than the previous play will be. The plot is described as “a modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII, presented as a singing competition/pop concert.” The plot surrounds the six wives debating who was treated the worst by their husband and ultimately how they rediscover their own identities. Auditions for it are open to all students even if they aren’t in drama or classes of the sort. While less information about pre-production is available there is still a lot of excitement, as there always seems to be with drama students. Auditions held Wednesday, September 17th after school with performances on November, 20th-22nd at 7 p.m. on school days and a 1 p.m. matinee on Saturday like always.
