Is the NFL overdoing it? Ever since Taylor Swift attended Arrowhead stadium there has been a series of memes, Tik Tok’s, Tweets, and rumors about Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift from NFL coaches, players, fans, and even Bill Belichick who Tweeted that this might be Kelce’s “biggest catch”. I think NFL fans partially blame the Swiftie fandom for all the ruckus all over the internet, but the NFL used her song “Welcome To New York” for a promo video against the New York Jets making it super obvious they are aware of the hype and the fact that the game announcers are often speaking about the latest T-Swift and Kelce gossip as they show her every movement on screen, seems like they are very much overdoing it.
Best selling musician and 12-time grammy award winning pop star, Taylor Swift was spotted supporting the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, Travis Kelce at Arrowhead stadium Sunday September 23, 2023 against the Chicago Bears. The “couple” all began when Kelce attended The Eras Tour with a friendship bracelet for Swift with his number on it, but wasn’t able to give it to her and spoke about his disappointment on his podcast “New Heights” with his brother Jason Kelce.
The funny thing in my opinion is that you would think that when celebrities attend games it was already exciting, but when Swift showed up it was like the world stopped. As far as I can tell after Swift went out to support Kansas City the NFL has gained a whole other level of popularity. Obviously the NFL has always been popular, but now that Swift is showing up to games and being seen out with Kelce, the Chiefs average viewers have skyrocketed. For instance, the Chiefs vs, Jets game averaged 27 million viewers, making it the second highest- watched game of the regular season! The NFL has also gone out of their way to show Kelce’s yard stats when Swift is present and when she is not. So based on those stats Kelce has 99.0 yards with Swift in attendance and 46.5 yards when Kelce is “left to his own devices” according to the NFL.
From my perspective, Swift and Kelce seem like a perfect match and it appears that Swifties seem to agree considering all the positive feedback all over social media. The silly thing I suppose is NFL fans getting angry when Swift shows up “taking away the spotlight” from Kelce, even though the NFL is clearly using Swift for clout.
