The school year has finally come to an end, and the time of year where the class of 2024 is preparing to walk the stage has come. Thankfully seniors have been able to make wonderful memories by having many fun activities, senior singing being one of them. Senior singing is an annual event held in the gym where students are acknowledged for their accomplishments, and where they have committed themselves to be after graduation.
This event was planned by Deb Whitbey who is the ASB advisor. She explains that senior signing is an evening that is taken to celebrate the seniors who have planned post high school, whether it’s going to the military, junior college, four year college, or trade school, it’s a time to honor seniors and their commitment to their post high school plans. Any senior that has committed to any type of education after high school was able to participate. Whitbey expresses how she wants to continue having this event, and she wants to make this event something special for the seniors. According to Whitbey, “We will have a sign in sheet where students will sign a card with their career goals that they want, and we’ll have refreshments and photo opportunities, and we’ll have a flag for each college each senior is committing too”.
Senior signing can be very useful to students, it gives students an opportunity to meet new people who may be going to the same school. This opportunity can be beneficial to the students because college can be a scary time and making friends can be scary. Zoey Sawyer, who attended senior signing states, “We can come together as a community because college can be a lonely time, just so no one is alone during that time.” Sawyer had committed to CSUB, what pushed her to decide to commit to CSUB is the new bachelor’s degree in music. Sawyer had come to the decision to become a high school choir teacher, she has always been connected to music and her family has too therefore why she decided to pursue music. “Senior signing is a realization that this is the last year of high school and we are transferring from high school to college, and you get to see your friends for a little longer,” states Sawyer.
Senior signing is not only about committing to a college it can also be about committing into the military. Cesar Duarte has been devoted to going to the Navy. Duarte feels that this gathering is important because, “I’m getting recognized for a national honor, and it’s an honor to serve my country,” claims Duarte. He expresses that this should be shared with to acknowledge the seniors who have worked hard to get where they are. Duarte says he wants to have a future for himself and he wants to do something he loves and support his girlfriend is what pushed him to join the Navy. All seniors have worked hard to get where they are and those who have committed should have the chance to get appreciated and recognized.
