In the past couple of years, Ridgeview High School has established a fun and creative activity for the students to feel welcomed to the Wolf Pack. This activity is: The Lip Sync Battle. Student’s from each grade level pick and lip sing to a song from a singer that is no longer with us.
Deb Whitbey is the Activities Director at Ridgeview High School. Whitbey talks about how they are holding the Lip Sync battle that has been done in the past, “This year’s seniors really want to leave on a bang so they really have put a lot of effort and energy and planning into this event.” She talks about how it took a week and a half to figure out a theme, and for each class to pick a song to perform too. Songs that were most popular for this battle were Tupac songs, “Seniors got to pick theirs first and then the other classes.” The constants are given three minutes each to perform. They are judged by their creativity, dance moves, and their costumes. Sadly to say junior class will not be performing in this year’s lip sync contest because none of the junior class went out to participate. “It was a big challenge trying to convince juniors to participate and in the end there were none,” says Whitbey. Whitbey says that in this lip sync battle they are tying it into the demise of our wolfy school mascot. She hopes that even though it’s a morbid death tone it will show the school community it’s really talking about family and unit, commitment to each other.
Mia Franco, a student at Ridgeview High School. Franco has been the President here for four years, so she has been required to be in the lip sync battles. “It’s super fun getting to make so many memories with all your other classmates outside of the club,” says Franco. It was challenging for her to get the mix done in time and get everything ready before they practice. Their practices were everyday after school and on Monday’s 3:30 to 6:30 pm. “We collaborated with a whole bunch of students from our grades,” says Franco. She says how it was important to her to pick a song that most people like because it will get the crowd hyped. She enjoys doing it to be able to interact with other people, “ I love to just laugh with all my classmates , I love the videos after each practice that we get, and all the random crap that we are doing.” Franco adds her own personal touch by making her personality throughout the dance.
Remundo Marquez, a student at Ridgeview School. Marquez has been doing the lip sync battle since freshman year, “ Kind of out of habit and it’s always fun to be here till like 7:30pm. be up at night every day.” Marquez picks the song based on the theme and the senior gets first priority. “The challenges were like getting everyone to practice, and a bunch of other stuff,” says Marquez. He practiced for the lip sync battle by letting the choreographers make it up and then teach it to them well while the music is playing. Marquez gets nervous sometimes about doing the lip sync battle, “I think it’s always nerve wracking leading up to it, but then once you’re there and do it like one or more times, you get used to it very quickly.”Marquez adds his own personal touch to the battle by planning the whole lip sync rally.
