As graduation approaches, senior Akasia Jackson reflects on the memories and experiences that shaped her high school journey. While excited for what comes next, she also feels bittersweet about leaving behind familiar faces and routines. With strong determination and a passion for basketball, Jackson hopes to continue chasing her goals and making the most of the opportunities ahead.
Jackson says, “Knowing I’m going to graduate feels great. It was definitely an experience for sure,” Jackson says now that graduation is getting closer she’s been feeling excitement, sadness, and is a little bit nervous. “My favorite high school memory honestly is whichever ones that have to do with basketball, that’s my favorite thing about high school.”
Jackson also says that one thing high school has taught her about herself is that she is very forgiving. “After I graduate, I want to go to Northridge, and I want to major in Journalism, and become a Sports Journalist and be able to watch basketball games and sports and all that kind of stuff.” Jackson also says, “Basketball really made everything worth it. Like, everyday I can look forward to going to a basketball practice or a basketball game. I’ve said for the longest time that basketball just brings me peace.” Jackson got an MVPA and she never expected it. She got the Bakersfield Jockey Award, Most Valuable Player Award, and she was an All-Star. One piece of advice Jackson would give to underclassmen is, “Keep going, and take everything at full force. It’s time to lock in and settle down, just do what you gotta do.”
Eric Singleton, a security guard at Ridgeview has seen Jackson go from a freshman to a senior. Singleton says, “Akasia came in very quiet. And then through sports and being in leadership roles… She is determined, she has a great moral compass, right or wrong, and she is one of the hardest working players I’ve ever coached.” Singleton says it’s really upsetting to see Akasia graduate and move on, but is also proud of her and ready to see where she goes next. Singleton also states, “Being an adult is not always going to be easy and I think that’s something Akasia can handle. She’s strong and determined, she’s got it… Akasia is destined for greatness.”
As Jackson prepares to graduate, she is leaving behind a high school journey defined by perseverance, growth, and dedication. Through both challenges and achievements, she has learned valuable lessons about herself while building lasting memories along the way. With strong ambitions and a passion for basketball, Jackson is ready to step into this next chapter of her life embracing whatever the future holds for her.
