One of the most important moments of a young person’s life is graduating from high school, as their life is heavily influenced and dictated by the next leading steps up to and after graduation. It’s common for teenagers to be unsure about what they want to do with their lives or what their next steps should be. Although what many teens aren’t prepared for is the big pool of responsibilities that come with the big jump of being 18. For example, this transition into adulthood has to worry about credit cards, vehicle purchases and maintenance, and especially employment.
High school graduation is severely important, but it’s not the only graduation that matters. There’s a college grad, maybe a trade school or military graduation as well. Afterwards, most students typically consider enrolling in a college or university, whether for two or four years. However, various students also prefer to join the military or the workforce, and there is nothing wrong with that! The only nerve-wracking issue is that in the eyes of the law, you’re considered an adult overnight. Sometimes, by the people around you, they will either be supportive of the fact that you are freshly of age and don’t have your life completely understood, or others expect you to have everything figured out overnight at the ripe age of 18. It’s definitely a challenge for those individuals who have to start thinking earlier if they know they have to plan for life immediately after graduation. There are many cases around the world where teens are kicked out of their homes directly after hitting 18, and it’s this form of struggle and challenge that comes along with being 18.
Despite familial obligations and personal responsibilities, the law determines your eligibility to gamble, get a tattoo, or be convicted of a crime. While a small percentage of students choose a different path and do things early, it’s not the most responsible or best decision of your life; it’s not what is best for you. Bottom line, it’s okay to not have everything figured out before, at, or after 18.
Yes, being 18 is a huge milestone! But just because you’re 18, you don’t have to rush and get all these things at once! You don’t have to get a tattoo, a lottery ticket, all at once, even though it might be a cliché. At 18, we are legally unshackled by the chains of parental restrictions; our freedom is unleashed, although this is when people typically make the most mistakes because of the rush to do so many other things at once or in a short time span.
We are all on one big path of life, and it’s okay for plans to change, to figure things out later, to wait, and to not know what to do. It’s okay to reach out when you need help, you need support, or if you just need someone to talk to.
