When people think of patriotism, they usually picture things like waving a flag, participating in ceremonies, singing of their anthem or just having fun on our national holidays such as the fourth of July. I feel patriotism cannot be confined to symbols and festivities.
But I think patriotism is more than than that, it’s about actually doing things that help your country.
It is believed that patriotism involves loving everything related to one’s country blindly. I don’t think that is completely true, but according to me, it involves admitting to the drawbacks of your country and having the will and determination to improve them. Sometimes being patriots means speaking up when something is wrong against corruption, injustice or any sort of discrimination in the country. That act may seem counter-productive to patriotism at times, yet it is more effective in the long run.
You can also show patriotism in small, everyday ways people don’t always notice. Treating others with respect, helping the people around you, and listening to the laws are examples of being patriotic as well. You don’t have to create long lectures and post on social media to prove that you love your country. In fact, you can express patriotism by behaving in an appropriate manner at home, in school, in the street, and elsewhere. By being a decent neighbor, assisting other individuals, and acting responsibly, we create a better community and make an impact in out nation.
As far as pupils are concerned, patriotism may be manifested differently yet remains equally essential. First, it entails remaining up to date with current events, developing critical thinking skills, and accepting alternative viewpoints. Second, patriotism implies respecting fellow students regardless of your attitudes toward particular opinions or beliefs. The educational institution is the place where a young person starts comprehending their societal role.
Unity is also one of the core elements of patriotism. A country is full of people who come from different walks of life, believe in different things, and have different experiences. Patriotic individuals respect all these differences in opinion, culture, and ethnicity but still strive to work together. Unity and hard work among people who differ on several issues lead to the strengthening of the entire nation, whereas divisiveness and hatred result in its weakening.
At the end of the day, patriotism is also about responsibility. Anyone can claim to be patriotic, but what counts is how one shows it through actions. Volunteering and attending local events are acts of responsible patriotism. Even something simple, such as realizing that one’s conduct can affect others, is an excellent demonstration of patriotism. Making efforts to improve the country regardless of how insignificant they are is a great way of expressing patriotism.
Patriotism does not involve becoming the noisiest or most conspicuous advocate of one’s nation. This term does not imply demonstrating love and devotion to one’s country by only expressing it verbally and by considering one’s nation faultless and perfect. Instead, patriotism involves being mindful, considerate, and ready to contribute to improvement.
